Program of Study

Bachelor of Business Administration with Major in the Business of Music

(Degree offered beginning fall semester 2008)

The Business of Music Program is very entrepreneurial in nature.  We believe that learning occurs best through hands-on projects.  Students are taught in a sequenced and integrated course of study how to create a comprehensive business plan for a new entertainment-based company.  Each class requires submission of a detailed and lengthy component to the plan.

Matriculation through the Business of Music Program occurs in a way that participants can easily double major and focus on one particular area of study.  For example, many students find marketing a useful second major to complement their degree, because promotion is of such importance, especially today, in the entertainment industry.  Receiving a double major only requires being judicious in selecting electives, generally not requiring any additional hours.  Students desiring to attend law school and become an entertainment attorney find additional preparation in accounting, finance and business law useful.

In Music Management (MUIN M350), participants are taught how to create a comprehensive strategy and planning document, using the latest thought from the field of management.  This class is only taught in the Fall Semester.

In the following Spring Semester, students take Music Marketing (MUIN M250) and Music Finance (MUIN M310).  In these two classes, students submit a 50-page plus project outlining in minute detail a plan for marketing and financing a new entertainment enterprise.  Participants are taught how to obtain financing for a music-related business through a Funding Proposal submitted to investors, banks, and partners.  Based on academically sound marketing theory, participants create a comprehensive Marketing Plan for promoting the enterprise, using the latest proven methods in the rapidly mutating industry.

In the Fall Semester of the Senior Year, groups of students organize into a team to create a comprehensive business plan for a new business.  Music Entrepreneurship (MUIN M400) takes all the knowledge, skills and abilities learned in the previous semesters and other business courses and organizes them into a thorough understanding of how to start a new business.  The deliverable for this class is a comprehensive business plan for starting a new business. These plans include an articulation of strategy, as well as a human resource plan, a funding proposal, a marketing plan, a research and development plan and a production plan. Most teams complete a plan for developing a new artist or entertainment support business, such as a management company, booking agency, recording studio or other service provider to the industry.

In the participant’s final semester, in conjunction with Business Policy (BA B445), Senior Seminar (MUIN M400) is taken in which each individual student completes a comprehensive business plan. The purpose of this class is to prepare students to enter the workforce ready to start a new entertainment-based enterprise.  Participants who decide not to stay in the entertainment industry find that the knowledge learned in the entire Business of Music Program transfer easily to other industries.  Skilled professionals with a fundamental knowledge of how to start a business are highly demanded today, as corporations became more agile and take advantage of new technologies and business opportunities.
