2004 Fall Lectures Featured Buchanan/Lowney
As part of its economics and business ethics guest lecture series, the College of Business invited two distinguished speakers to campus. James M. Buchanan, renowned economist and holder of the 1986 Alfred Nobel Memorial Prize in economic sciences delivered his lecture, "Public Choice: The Origins and Development of a Research Program," on October 22.
Buchanan currently serves as the advisory general director for the James M. Buchanan Center, and as the distinguished professor emeritus of economics at George Mason University. Buchanan has received numerous awards, including 17 honorary doctorates, and has written a number of books that have influenced broad audiences around the world.
The second lecture, "Leadership Lessons from a 450-Year-Old Company," held on November 12, featured Chris Lowney.
Lowney became the managing director of J.P. Morgan and Co. while in his 30s. Today, he is the well-known author of Heroic Leadership: Best Practices from a 450-Year-Old Company That Changed the World . In his book, Lowney applies the four core values of self-awareness, ingenuity, love, and heroism and identifies 16th-century priestly practices used to train pupils who showed strong leadership skills. He also addresses some of the Jesuit principles he learned during his time as a seminary student.
