Loyola Business - Spring 2004

Dean's Message

As the new year begins, we celebrate the accomplishments of several of our students and initiatives of our faculty. Brandon Thibodeaux, a double major in economics and finance, was recently selected in a nationwide competition for a year of postgraduate study at universities in Northern Ireland. Launched in 1998, the Mitchell Scholarship recognizes outstanding young Americans who exhibit the highest standards of academic excellence, leadership, and community service. Brandon is one of only 12 individuals nationwide to receive this honor, and is the first student from Loyola University New Orleans to be selected for a Mitchell Scholarship. Brandon will pursue peace and conflict studies at the University of Ulster.

Fernando Rivera, a senior finance major, was employed as an intern on Wall Street with J.P. Morgan this past summer. This was his second summer to be with J.P. Morgan. He was joined last summer by his younger brother, Osmin, a junior finance major. The brothers are from San Pedro-Sula, Honduras, and were two of only 100 individuals selected nationwide to intern at J.P. Morgan. Fernando has been offered and will take a job on Wall Street with J.P. Morgan after he graduates in May.

The College of Business is achieving greater visibility on the national and international scenes. This past November, the college hosted the annual meeting of the Board of Directors of the International Association of Jesuit Business Schools (IAJBS). Through the leadership of Professor Nick Capaldi, a Liberty Fund Colloquium on Commerce, Culture, and Liberty will be held in New Orleans in February 2004. In June, Professor Capaldi is hosting an international gathering of scholars, religious leaders, and business professionals for a conference, titled “The Ethics of Commerce: An Inquiry into the Religious Roots and Spiritual Context of Ethical Business Practice.” Papers will be presented on various religious traditions’ perspectives on the ethics of commerce.

Starting in April, we also begin a series of international meetings, reflecting the significant role that international business occupies in our mission. To lead off, Professors Joseph Ganitsky, Ron Christner, Brenda Joyner, and Wing Fok will host a conference in April on Strengthening Louisiana’s Internationalization Efforts. This conference comes at an opportune time as the State of Louisiana, under new leadership, attempts to enhance Louisiana’s economic development. In August, the college will host the International Division of the Academy of Management conference, and head a panel focusing on the Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). The Academy of Management meeting is the largest annual gathering of management faculty members. Also in August, Professor Ganitsky is hosting the annual meeting of the Directors of Business and International Education (BIE) Grants funded by the U.S. Department of Education.

Following up on my request of past years, I appeal to all CBA alumni to assist in making your college better. If you are aware of bright, potential students for our program, please refer them to us. If you are aware of employment opportunities for our graduates, please let us know. If you have suggestions as to how we can improve what we are doing, please provide us with your input. If you can help us financially through an annual fund contribution restricted to the College of Business, we welcome your assistance. If each CBA alumni/alumnae were to make an annual fund contribution of only $50 per year, we most assuredly would have the financial resources necessary to accomplish our goals. If you are ever in New Orleans, or just in the neighborhood, please stop by the college. I know you will be impressed with the changes we have made. I hope to see you soon.
