In early 2001, Trey moved to New Orleans from Gulfport, Mississippi and began working as tax and audit staff for a local C.P.A. firm, Kushner LaGraize, L.L.C. Not long after, while playing tennis with some new friends, one of them learned what Trey did for a living and brought up some issues with his tax return that he had been self-preparing for years. After spending a few minutes with him and reviewing several years of returns he had filed, Trey immediately saw the problem that had resulted in his friend leaving literally thousands of dollars on the table each year.
This case illustrated a really important point to Trey that stayed with him for many years to come…there are a lot of people who want more service and experience than you may find with some of your ‘big box’ seasonal tax preparation businesses but who also don’t need all the bells and whistles (and more importantly, the fees!) that go along with your larger, more traditional C.P.A. firms.
In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina deeply affected Trey like most others along the Gulf of Mexico. While he lost almost everything he owned, the aftermath of Katrina resulted in exposing him to the new, growing field of Forensic Accounting which included calculating economic damages for businesses who had also been affected by Katrina. Trey used this new experience to eventually advance his career to the level of Senior Manager of Consulting Services at a regional C.P.A. firm, LaPorte Sehrt Romig Hand.
During the summer of 2010, Trey made the commitment to devote himself full-time to growing his own practice, Robert V. Luby, III, L.L.C., incorporating a decade plus of experience in tax and accounting with his more recent litigation and forensic consulting experience. This was a fortuitous time for such a move, since most of the last two years have involved calculating economic damages resulting from the Deepwater Horizon Incident i.e. BP oil spill for almost a thousand claimants.
Trey is a Certified Forensic Financial Analyst and a Certified Fraud Examiner and holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in Accounting from the University of Southern Mississippi.
