What is the Loyola Core, and why do I have to take core courses?

The Loyola Core represents Loyola’s commitment to the liberal arts education of all students. The number of hours in Common Curriculum courses may vary from college to college, but all students, regardless of major, must complete a set of core courses. These courses focus on fundamental issues that are central to intellectual and spiritual development

What majors are available to Business students?

Accounting, Economics, Finance, International Business, Management, and Marketing.

What minors are available to Business students?

Business majors may minor in Accounting, International Business, or Legal Studies. Business students may also minor in a discipline offered by another college or in any of Loyola's interdisciplinary minors. For additional information, please see the Director of Students Services, Melissa Ridley, in Miller 306.

May I take a prerequisite course concurrently with my required course?

As a general rule, you may not. Prerequisites are there to help you, not to impede your matriculation. You need prerequisite courses in order to handle the material in the required course.

Can I be assigned a faculty advisor?

Yes. Faculty advisors are there to mentor you as you choose a major and explore the opportunities associated with your degree.

May I study abroad and still graduate on time?

Absolutely! There are many study abroad opportunities, including programs in the College of Business that travel to Europe every summer. We recommend that you study abroad somehow, some way before you graduate. It’s too great an experience to pass up!

How many classes are required to maintain full-time status?

Four classes (12 credit hours) are considered full time. You may take up to seven, if you qualify. The average is five to six classes a semester.

Why do I have to complete an internship?

Because some experiences are impossible to gain in the traditional classroom setting, the College of Business requires students to perform an internship in order to gain relevant career-related experiences, reinforce classroom study through a comparison of theory and practice, and pursue the study of specialized business topics in their field of interest in a professional setting.

Although most internships take place in the summer, many students complete them during the fall and spring semesters in New Orleans. Work sites vary from Fortune 500 companies to small, family-owned businesses to not-for-profit organizations both in New Orleans and around the country. You also receive 3 hours of academic credit for completing the internship.

What does it mean when I’ve been placed on probation?

It means that your overall GPA has dropped below a 2.0, and, if in the following semester you do not raise it above a 2.0, as a general rule, you will be excluded for a semester. If any of this happens, you will be notified by the Associate Dean of the College by letter.

Are there any general requirements to graduate?

Yes. You must have at least a 2.0 GPA in both your major courses and all your coursework combined.

What should I do if I have any other questions?

See Melissa Ridley in Miller 306 or your faculty advisor, and they will gladly discuss them with you. Whether it be about a current class, a change in major or information about study abroad, please come in and let’s talk!
